Introduction
Ledger hardware wallets provide a secure way to store the private keys that control your cryptocurrency. Unlike software wallets, Ledger devices keep your private keys offline inside the secure element, preventing remote attackers from accessing them. The start process uses Ledger Live, Ledger's official companion app, to initialize the device, manage accounts, and perform signed transactions.
Before you begin
Prepare the following to ensure a smooth setup:
- A computer with a modern browser, or the Ledger Live desktop app (Windows, macOS, Linux).
- A stable internet connection to download Ledger Live and any firmware updates.
- Your Ledger device box and the supplied USB cable (use a data-capable cable).
- A secure place to write and store your recovery phrase offline (paper or metal backup).
Install Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official management app. You can use it in desktop form or the web-based flow. Always download Ledger Live from the official domain: ledger.com/start.
- Go to ledger.com/start and choose your platform.
- Download and install the Ledger Live app, or run the web setup if preferred.
- Open Ledger Live and follow on-screen prompts to begin the device setup.
Initialize your Ledger device
When you first connect a Ledger device, you'll go through initialization steps. Follow these carefully and never skip verification prompts shown on the device screen.
- Choose a PIN: Select a PIN directly on the device; this protects against unauthorized physical use.
- Write down your recovery phrase: Ledger will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. Write it down in order and store it offline. This phrase is the only backup for your funds.
- Verify the recovery phrase: Some devices will ask you to confirm words to ensure you copied them correctly.
- Install apps: Use Ledger Live's Manager to install cryptocurrency apps (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum) onto the device as needed.
Add accounts and manage assets
Inside Ledger Live, add accounts for the cryptocurrencies you hold. Ledger Live aggregates balances, transaction history, and allows you to send or receive assets. For ERC-20 tokens and other chains, you may need to add custom tokens or use integrated third-party apps through Ledger Live.
Performing transactions
When you create a transaction in Ledger Live, the transaction details are sent to your device for review. The device displays destination addresses and amounts; you must manually approve each signature. This on-device verification prevents malicious software from secretly altering transactions.
Firmware updates and device authenticity
Ledger periodically releases firmware updates that improve security and add features. Always install firmware only through Ledger Live and verify prompts displayed on your device. Ledger devices include a device authenticity check — follow on-screen instructions during setup to confirm your device is genuine.
